Job Description



GENERAL SUMMARY:

As an Outpatient Complex Coder, you'll play a vital role in the healthcare ecosystem by transforming detailed medical records into accurate, compliant coding that directly impacts patient care and organizational success. You'll apply expert coding principles to analyze and code complex diagnostic and procedural information, ensuring precise reimbursement and supporting critical healthcare operations. Your meticulous attention to detail and deep coding expertise will drive accurate patient databases that fuel medical research, enhance care evaluation, and enable smart administrative decisions. By mastering coding guidelines, third-party policies, and accreditation standards, you'll be the trusted source that keeps healthcare data flowing accurately—ultimately supporting better patient outcomes and provider-patient relationships.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Expertly review, analyze, and code complex diagnostic and procedural information from patient medical records with precision and compliance
  • Abstract and compile comprehensive patient data to build robust databases that power medical research initiatives and patient care evaluations
  • Ensure all coding aligns with established guidelines, third-party reimbursement policies, regulations, and accreditation requirements
  • Optimize reimbursement accuracy while maintaining the highest standards of coding integrity and compliance
  • Serve as a trusted data source that supports informed administrative decision-making and enhances provider-patient continuity of care
  • Stay current with evolving coding standards and healthcare regulations to maintain expertise and organizational compliance

Qualifications



EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required.
  • Additional specialty coding certification required or five (5) years coding experience.
  • One to two (1-2) years college or additional coursework in Accounting, Business, Healthcare Administration or Medical Record Sciences preferred.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, disease processes, medical terminology, pharmacology, and coding systems.
  • Minimum of two (2) years coding experience required.
  • Specialty coding experience preferred.


CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:

  • Certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), CPC, or CCS certification required.
